Key of Sea: A Singing and Nature Retreat on Canada’s West Coast

Share

We are once again bringing together an outstanding combination of people and passion for our second annual Key of Sea: A singing and nature retreat on Canada’s West Coast, a retreat where music, community and nature come together, offering a rare opportunity to connect with the wild beauty of the our region and the joy of singing.

Whether you love nature, have a passion for singing, or simply wish to find your voice, Key of Sea is open to all. This inclusive retreat welcomes participants of all singing and outdoor experience levels, offering an inviting and supportive environment where every guest can explore music and enjoy nature.

Under the guidance of Wendy Nixon Stothert, B.Ed, MEdL, and Bamfield residents Abigail Andiel and Alessandra Gentile, all highly respected figures in their communities, participants will explore the deep connections between music, nature, community and themselves.

Wendy, a beloved figure in Vancouver Island’s music community, has devoted her life to fostering connections through song. She has inspired and led choirs, ensembles, and communities alike, believing that music is a profound way to unite people. Her gift lies not only in her musical talent but in her ability to bring out the voice in anyone and everyone, guiding them toward a joyful and fulfilling experience in song. Her love of the outdoors and passion for the way music resonates with nature make this retreat truly special.

Abi brings a wide range of talent and abilities to the retreat.  Abi is a musical creative, coastal ecosystem steward, and seasoned kayak guide who has called Bamfield home since 2023. She has a background in marine biology and years of guiding in remote waters—she ensures every paddle is safe, soulful, and steeped in wonder. As part of Bamfield’s Aloysius Duet, her voice at the lodge—whether it moves people to dance, slap their knees or brings tears—has become a celebrated part of our lodge experience.

Alessandra is an interdisciplinary professional with a holistic care-centric approach to life rooted in empathy and compassion. Since 2016, Alessandra has found her heart pulled to the pulse of Bamfield. She has a MSc in Fisheries Science and works for the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. She will bring her skills as a community yoga instructor and talented vocalist as the other half of Aloysius Duet.

Wendy will guide participants through vocal explorations and songs designed to encourage connection to their own voices and expression, to the sound of the group, and to nature. No previous singing experience or music reading are required.

Beyond the core music  activities, the retreat includes boat excursions, kayaking,  walks, cultural sessions with Huu-ay-aht guide Qiic Qiica (Keats), and moments of relaxation through yoga, meditation, and sunsets by the sea.

For those joining a travel companion and perhaps less incline or interested to sing at all, that’s okay! The retreat offers plenty of additional activities, ensuring a fulfilling experience for all, from discovering coastal wildlife to enjoying the peaceful solitude of the wilderness.

Join us for four unforgettable nights, where you’ll discover the power of music, the beauty of nature, and the joy of community at Key of Sea.
