Beginning the middle of August, Barkley Sound comes alive with wildlife that make this area their winter home. It often feels like an ecological switch was turned on as thousands of seabirds and sealions start to settle in for the winter marking a new year for wildlife. Meanwhile we are still enjoying some of the nicest days of the summer. The seas are typically calm allowing for easy exploration by boat or kayak. The sun is also setting a bit earlier allowing for night time exploration such as bioluminescence viewing, stargazing or even listening to bats with our ultrasonic microphone. Also at this time Barkley Sound's largest chinook salmon run is making it's way past the front yard.

In addition to the arrival of the seasonal migrants, our usual cast of year-round local wildlife such the coastal black bear, harbour seals and oyster catchers are in abundance.
